White Ink Maintenance, Expanded Color Gamut, and What’s Coming Down the Pipeline

Two weeks out from PRINTING United Expo and the equipment world is already showing us where things are headed. This week, two technical developments stand out as particularly important for understanding DTF quality and what’s coming to market: white ink maintenance and expanded color gamut printing.

Here’s what’s happening, why it matters, and what customers ordering custom printing should watch for.

The Big Picture: DTF quality separation is coming down to two things: how well shops maintain their white ink systems, and whether they’ve adopted expanded color gamut (RGBO) printing. Both directly affect what you see in the finished product.


White Ink: The Hidden Quality Factor

White ink is the most expensive component in DTF printing and the most maintenance-intensive. It’s also the single most common cause of quality problems in DTF transfers.

Here’s why: DTF white ink contains titanium dioxide particles suspended in liquid carrier. Those particles are heavier than the liquid they’re suspended in. Left alone, they settle to the bottom—which means uneven ink distribution, clogged nozzles, and quality issues that show up as banding, faded colors on dark fabric, or transfers that peel too easily.

What Proper White Ink Maintenance Looks Like

Continuous circulation. Quality DTF printers include automatic white ink circulation systems that keep the ink moving even when the printer isn’t in use. Ink that sits static separates. Ink that keeps moving stays consistent.

Daily nozzle checks. Before running any production job, a test print reveals whether all nozzles are firing properly. Clogged nozzles from settled white ink get cleaned before they ruin customer orders.

Regular deep cleaning cycles. Weekly or bi-weekly, printers need full white ink line flushes to prevent buildup. This takes time and uses expensive ink—but skipping it costs more in defects.

Proper storage temperature. White ink stored too cold or too hot degrades faster. Climate-controlled shops maintain consistent conditions that extend ink life and preserve quality.

Scheduled parts replacement. Dampers, ink lines, and printheads all wear out. Shops that replace these on schedule (before failure) produce consistent quality. Shops that wait for problems ship defects to customers.

The Cost Reality: Proper white ink maintenance takes several hours weekly and uses significant ink volume. This is one of the biggest hidden differences between quality shops and commodity operations. When someone advertises very cheap DTF, this is often where corners get cut first.

What This Means for Customers

You can’t see white ink maintenance in a supplier’s marketing materials. But you can see the results in the finished product:

Transfers on dark fabrics with faded or dull colors = white ink issues
Visible banding in solid color areas = poor ink circulation
Transfers that peel or crack too early = weak white ink base
Inconsistent quality between orders = irregular maintenance

Ask suppliers directly about their maintenance schedules. Reputable shops will tell you. Shops cutting corners won’t have good answers.


Expanded Color Gamut (RGBO): The Real Quality Leap

Standard DTF printing uses CMYK inks—Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. These four colors mix to reproduce most of what you see on a digital screen. But not everything.

CMYK genuinely struggles with certain colors:

Royal blue often prints as purple-tinged or dull
Bright oranges come out muddy or brown-shifted
Vibrant reds lose saturation
Rich greens print washed out
Brand colors with specific Pantone values often can’t be matched accurately

This is why DTF (and screen printing, and inkjet printing generally) has color limitations that customers have always had to live with.

What Expanded Gamut Changes

Expanded gamut printing adds separate ink channels for Red, Green, Blue, and Orange (RGBO) alongside the standard CMYK. Instead of trying to mix these colors from CMYK primaries, the printer applies them directly.

The result is dramatic for problematic colors:

True royal blue that actually looks royal blue
Neon-adjacent oranges and reds that print vibrant
Deep, saturated greens that don’t wash out
Better brand color matching for corporate identity work
More color options available for creative and premium designs

The Practical Implications

Expanded gamut DTF is currently limited to specific equipment platforms. The Prestige XL3 (triple I3200 printheads with RGBO plus CMYK) is one prominent example that will be demonstrated at PRINTING United Expo later this month.

If expanded gamut production becomes reliable and cost-effective, this technology represents a genuine premium service tier. Customers who need accurate brand colors, vibrant designs, or difficult color reproduction will have options that weren’t available in CMYK-only DTF.

For most customers today, this is a “watch this space” development. For customers with specific color-critical needs, it’s the technology to ask suppliers about over the next 6-12 months.

Real-World Example: If you’ve ever ordered custom shirts with your brand’s royal blue and gotten back something that looked more like navy or muted purple—that’s CMYK’s fundamental limitation, not a shop’s mistake. Expanded gamut printing solves this problem at the equipment level.


Hybrid DTG/DTF Machines Are Real

Brother’s GTX300 combines DTG (direct-to-garment) and DTF (direct-to-film) in one machine. Shops can use DTG for soft-hand cotton work and switch to DTF for polyester, blends, performance fabrics, and unusual print locations.

This matters because shops previously had to buy separate machines for each process. A hybrid platform means better decoration matched to specific garment types without duplicating equipment investment.

For customers, this means suppliers can offer more nuanced recommendations: “This design works better as DTG on cotton” versus “This is better as DTF on your polyester blend.” The result is better-quality finished products.


Industrial-Scale DTF Is Here

Brother’s new DTRX is a 32-inch all-in-one roll DTF system rated for high-volume production (up to 19.52 meters of output). Combined with recent industrial launches from Epson, Mimaki, and Roland, established manufacturers are legitimizing DTF as industrial textile equipment.

This is significant because DTF started with converted desktop printers just a few years ago. Now major manufacturers are building purpose-built industrial platforms. The industry is maturing rapidly.

For volume customers, this means better consistency and faster turnaround on large orders. For everyone else, it means DTF technology isn’t going anywhere—it’s becoming standard infrastructure.


Multi-Function Machines Coming Down-Market

LONGER is currently taking preorders on the ePrint—a single machine that claims to handle UV printing, UV-DTF, DTG, apparel DTF, and textured/relief printing. Preorders start at $1,699 (single-head) and $2,499 (dual-head) through September 10.

Whether the actual production reliability will match the marketing claims remains to be seen. Multi-function machines historically have tradeoffs versus dedicated equipment. But the direction matters: inexpensive multi-function machines are lowering the barrier to entry for small custom decoration operations.

For customers, this means more shops will enter the market. Quality will vary widely. Choose based on demonstrated results, not equipment claims.


UV-DTF Ink Chemistry Advances

Beyond faster printers, the actual ink technology behind UV-DTF is advancing. NUtec Digital Ink recently introduced Ruby R10-DTF, compatible with Epson I3200, I1600, and XP600 printheads. It’s designed specifically for hard surfaces—glass, metal, wood, plastic, and ceramic—with clean transfer that doesn’t require vinyl-style weeding.

This continues to strengthen UV-DTF as a serious alternative for short-run decals, promotional products, and personalized items on hard surfaces.


PRINTING United Expo: Two Weeks Out

PRINTING United Expo 2026 runs September 23-25 in Las Vegas. Based on exhibitor previews, this show will be unusually DTF and technology-heavy.

AA Print Supply alone plans to run five DTF machines live at the show, including:

Epson’s 35-inch SureColor G6070
DTF Station’s new all-in-one Vega S17
The triple-I3200 Prestige XL3 with expanded RGBO color
Automated shakers and presses

Combined with equipment previews from Brother, LONGER, Roland, Mimaki, and others, expect meaningful announcements across DTF, UV-DTF, hybrid systems, and workflow automation.

We’ll be watching closely and reporting back on what actually matters for small business customers—not just the marketing hype, but the practical implications of what’s newly possible.

Expanded color gamut developments. If RGBO printing becomes reliable and cost-effective, this is the kind of capability that opens up new customer opportunities. Difficult brand colors, premium creative work, and color-critical projects could become achievable at production quality.

Both of these are less about marketing and more about the actual work of making DTF transfers that meet customer expectations.


Practical Takeaways for Customers

If you’re ordering custom apparel, stickers, or promotional products right now:

Ask about white ink maintenance. If a supplier’s answer is “we do it when we notice problems,” find a different supplier. If they can describe their actual schedule, they probably do the work.

Understand color limitations. Standard CMYK DTF has real color limits. If accurate brand color reproduction is critical, ask specifically whether your supplier has expanded gamut capability now or on the roadmap.

Match decoration method to garment type. Shops with hybrid DTG/DTF capability can better recommend the right process for each fabric. This produces better results than one-method-fits-all approaches.

Consider suppliers investing in capability. Shops that update equipment, adopt new technology, and stay current will produce better results than those coasting on older setups.

PRINTING United Expo will provide concrete information about what’s actually coming to market in late 2026 and into 2027. Expect major equipment announcements, new ink formulations, workflow automation updates, and probably a few surprises.
