Why Buying Veteran Matters
When you hire a veteran-owned business in Arizona, you’re not just getting a service.
You’re supporting someone who put their country first.
Arizona is home to more than 485,000 veterans. That’s 6.5% of our state’s population.
Many of these veterans have started businesses after their military service. Moreover, when communities support veteran businesses, veteran unemployment decreases.
The economic impact is significant. Veteran businesses contribute $1.2 trillion to the US economy annually.
However, it’s not just about economics. Veterans bring specific skills to business:
- Leadership under pressure
- Attention to detail
- Problem-solving in difficult situations
- Mission-focused execution
- Integrity and accountability
My Story: From National Guard to Printing
I’m Matt Harvey. I served 25 years in the Arizona Army National Guard. Eventually, I retired as a Major.
When I started Little 6 Industries with my wife Lindsay, I brought military discipline to printing. For instance, temperature control protocols came from equipment maintenance. Quality control came from military inspections. “Mission first” customer service became our standard.
We’re a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB). That certification means something.
It means we’ve verified our service. It means we’ve proven our disability status. It means we’re held to a standard.
This directory exists to help you find veteran businesses across Arizona. Additionally, it helps you understand what SDVOSB means. Most importantly, it helps you make purchasing decisions that support those who served.
What Is a Veteran-Owned Business?
Not all veteran businesses are the same. Here’s what the terms mean:
Veteran-Owned Business (VOB)
Definition: 51% or more owned by veteran(s)
Service requirement: Honorable discharge from any US military branch
Verification: Self-certified or third-party verified
Disability: No disability requirement
Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB)
Definition: 51% or more owned by service-disabled veteran(s)
Disability requirement: VA disability rating (any percentage)
Size standards: SBA size standards apply (varies by industry)
Contracting advantage: Federal law requires agencies award 3% of contracts to SDVOSBs
Certification Paths
1. Federal (SAM.gov):
Required for federal contracts. Registration is free. The SBA handles verification for SDVOSB status.
2. State Certification:
Arizona doesn’t currently have state-level veteran business certification. However, some cities and counties have preference programs.
3. Third-Party Verification:
- NVBDC (National Veteran Business Development Council): nvbdc.org
- VetCert: vetcert.org
- NaVOBA (National Veteran-Owned Business Association): navoba.org
These certifications provide credibility. Consequently, they help with corporate supplier diversity programs.
Little 6’s Status
- Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB)
- SAM.gov registered and verified
- NAICS Codes: 323111 (Commercial Printing), 339950 (Signs), 424990 (Wholesale)
- Owner: Matt Harvey, 25-year Arizona Army National Guard veteran (retired Major)
Why Certification Matters
- Trust signal: Buyers know your status is verified
- Government contracts: Access to set-aside opportunities
- Corporate programs: Supplier diversity initiatives prefer certified vendors
- Credibility: Stands out in competitive bids
Common Misconceptions
Myth: “All veteran businesses qualify for government contracts.”
Reality: No. You must be certified through SAM.gov.
Myth: “SDVOSB is only for severely disabled veterans.”
Reality: No. Any VA disability rating qualifies (even 10%).
Myth: “Certification is expensive.”
Reality: Federal certification through SAM.gov is completely FREE.
Why Support Veteran-Owned Businesses?
Economic Impact
National Level:
- 2.5 million veteran-owned businesses in the US
- $1.2 trillion in annual revenue
- 5.8 million employees
Arizona Level:
- 485,000+ veterans living in Arizona
- Thousands of veteran-owned businesses
- Major industries: construction, professional services, technology, retail
Beyond Economics—Mission Continuation
Veterans bring specific skills from military service:
Leadership Under Pressure: We’ve made decisions when lives were on the line. Consequently, business decisions feel manageable by comparison.
Attention to Detail: Military inspections taught us nothing is “close enough.” Therefore, we bring precision to our work.
Adaptability: We’re trained to overcome obstacles. When plan A fails, we already have plans B through Z ready.
Integrity and Accountability: Military values don’t disappear with the uniform. We fix our mistakes. No excuses.
Real Example: Little 6 Industries
Military precision carries into our printing business in specific ways:
- Temperature control: Learned from military equipment maintenance (critical for DTF printing)
- Quality control: Military inspection standards apply to every order
- “Mission first” customer service: Your deadline is our mission
- Accountability: We stand behind our work, always
Community Impact
Supporting veteran businesses creates ripple effects throughout the community:
- Veteran businesses often hire other veterans
- Lower unemployment in the veteran community
- Mentorship for transitioning service members
- Economic stability for military families

How to Verify Veteran Business Status
Unfortunately, “stolen valor” extends to business. Some companies falsely claim veteran ownership for competitive advantage.
Here’s how to verify legitimacy:
1. SAM.gov (Most Credible)
How to Use: Search at sam.gov
Enter: Business name or UEI number
Shows: SDVOSB status, NAICS codes, ownership verification
Credibility: Most trusted source for federal contracting
2. Third-Party Certifications
- NVBDC: nvbdc.org
- VetCert: vetcert.org
- NaVOBA: navoba.org
3. State Business Registrations
Arizona Corporation Commission: ecorp.azcc.gov
Verify business entity exists. Check registered officers.
4. Ask Directly
“What branch did you serve in? When did you separate or retire?”
- Real veterans answer easily and specifically
- Imposters give vague answers or avoid the question
5. Check Veteran Organization Membership
- VFW, American Legion, DAV membership
- Maricopa Vets registration
- Local veteran business groups
Red Flags
- Refuses to provide verification
- Can’t answer basic military questions
- Claims “veteran-friendly” instead of “veteran-owned”
- No documentation available
- Story changes when asked for details
Little 6’s Verification
We’re transparent about our status:
- SAM.gov registered and verified SDVOSB
- Matt Harvey: 25 years Arizona Army National Guard, retired Major
- Maricopa Vets member
